New Narcissism, Social Media, and Youth Culture

New narcissism is in many ways like old narcissism, narcissism can best be explained by using the example giving to us in “ Me, Me, Me, line 31”; There are several versions of the story of Narcissus, but they all have one thing in common: A young man falls hopelessly in love with his own reflection in a pool of water.” This can be interpreted in many ways, but the way I see it is, that a narcissist is a person who is very self-centered. New Narcissism is off course based on the same principles. But instead of being in love with themselves, new narcissist want people to see them, because they believe that they are special.

If we for instance look at “Me, Me, Me, line 63; More than 150.000 people, for instance, were prepared to suffer absolute humiliation to achieve instant stardom, or at least the tabloid version of it, for the current series of The X Factor. For the main part, those auditioning were classic narcissist: convinced that they deserve success despite their transparent lack of talent.” Narcissist flock to these audiontions because they believe that this will make people appreciate them. The best proving ground for new narcissist however still remain the internet. The internet is the ideal outlet for them, because there is no to tell them to shut up. Youtube is probaly the best expample of this, a lot of people have reached instant stardom by just uploading a clip of themselves and sit back as people watch it!
