The Xhosa tribe is part of the South African Nguni migration which is a group of Bantu people. The Nguni people include the Xhosas, Zulus, Swazi and Ndebele people.
Slowly the Nguni people moved south from the area of the Great lakes. It’s believed widely that when the Khoi migrated to the Cape, the Xhosas were already in the Eastern Cape. The Khoi people were part of the original san population in South Africa and they lived peacefully together with the Xhosas. Until the Frontier Wars where the Xhosas fought the British and other European settlers. They fought over who certain areas belonged to. There were nine Frontier Wars and they all lasted 100 years in total.
The Xhosas were forced east in the years 1811-1812 by the British and a lot of tribes where pushed into the land of the Xhosas in the years following. Many of these tribes adapted the Xhosa culture and language and are sometimes considered Xhosa.
During the apartheid system the Xhosas were known for taking part in the ANC or African National Congress where they fought for democracy and human rights and equality for black people. The Xhosas have always been interested in knowledge and a lot of Xhosas were educated in order to reduce the inequality.
