We have to go back in the 16th century, to Europe and Switzerland. A group of religious people believed that baptism was for adults, and wanted the state and the church to be separated. They are also called Mennonites, called after Menno Simons. But then in 17th century, some of the Mennonites felt that the church was too slack, and also allowed many modern things. The leader of the people was Jacob Amman, who gave the name to the Amish, wanted the church to be strict. The Amish speak three languages, called Pennsylvania Dutch (German), English and High German.
They heard about rich farmland in USA, and were invited by William Penn to settle in Lancaster Country (1727). People from the outside world, also want to join them to get away from the modern society and stress.
The Amish clothes is different to ours, they wear more old fashioned clothes. An Amish Female wear: big black bonnets, long blue dresses, and an aprin over the dress. Amish Male wear: black hats with wide round brims, baggy pants held up with suspenders. They don’t wear buttons, only hooks and eyes, or suspenders.
The Amish Families don’t use electricity, like radio and TV, because it won’t bring them near to God. Instead of lamps, they use oil lamps or daylight. They also don’t aloud telephones at home, but if necessary, there would be a telephone outside in the woods. Their transportation is very slow, because they use buggies, but in some cases they pay other to drive them to a place. They are very hypocritical.
