“Flowers” is a short story by the author, Eve McDave from 2011 and is about difficulties in the family in the lower class of society in South Africa. We are following the young girl, Lucy, who lives with her mother. Now and then, the father visits the two girls bringing some cash to help them financially. Lucy would like to make some money so she too can help her mother, and therefor she goes out to pick flowers and goes around the neighborhood selling them. Instead of getting happy when Lucy gives the money to her mother, she gets angry and makes the girl give back all the money she made so it will not seem like she sent out her daughter to make money for her.

Analytical essay

Understanding the settings of a story like this is very important as it has an impact on, how we understand the themes and the whole story in general. The short story takes place in South Africa, which is a country with big disparity between rich and poor. In the short story “Flowers”, we get an insight in the life of a lower-class family and the struggles they endure. The main character, Lucy, lives alone with her mother who is probably out of work because they are dependent on the father’s financial support. On line 33 it says: “What you’ve earned isn’t enough for us to live on”, which refers to the dependency the have to the father’s money.
