Analyse af Stephen Kings 'The Man Who Loved Flowers'

The story takes place in May, 1963 in New York. It’s early evening. The main character is an unknown man who is walking up 3rd Avenue. He calls himself “love”. It's a stunning evening, and the sky is just changing its colour from light blue to violet. The man is wearing a dull light grey suit. He looks like he is madly in love. People around him all seem to perceive and respond to this sparkling feeling. The man stops at a flower vendor, where a transistor radio drones on about a war simmering in Vietnam, and a woman's body that was found in the river, and a hammer murderer that was on the loose. As he discusses with the vendor, it is assured, the girl he is crazy in love with, is named Norma. He buys half a dozen roses, and leaves. He continues up 3rd Avenue, and all the people on the street continue responding to him and the quite humorous love struck look in his face.He turns into an alley. At this time it is quickly getting darker, and stars are starting to appear. He is on his way to meet Norma. He sees a woman walking down the alley, and he rushes up to her. He shouts her name, Norma, and she looks around the alley. He says: "I've bought some flowers for you, Norma." The woman tells him; "You must be mistaken, my name is…." She sees a hammer in his pocket and opens up her mouth, trying to scream. He kills her because she isn't Norma, just as he has been doing five times earlier in the past. After an unspecified amount of time, he leaves the alley.
