This short story tells the story of a young man’s evening in New York, in 1963, where he is walking the streets and to everyone around him, he looks like he is in love, with a smile on his lips and a bouncy walk, so people assume he is on his way to a girl. He comes by numerous people and by the description of these people we get a feeling that we’re on the dark side of New York; there is an old bum, teenagers, men with beer bellies, people watching TV outside a hardware store and a couple of pregnant women who hangs out, smoking, in front of a washateria.
Our main character comes by an elderly man who sells flowers from a handcart, and on the radio this man has, it is said that there is a hammer murderer on the loose. The two of them has a dialogue about what kind of flowers the young man should buy. The young man buys some flowers and walks on. He turns down an alley, and waits for the girl. The girl comes up, but she does not recognize our main character. He kills her with a hammer he had in his inner-pocket and walks away, looking like he is in love, with that smile on his lips, and that bouncy walk.
