The poem is about a Windrush child, who is about to leave what I think is probably the Caribbean. When they are about to leave there are seabirds asking why they are leaving. And I assume its family and friends not understanding why they are leaving. And then thinks of when they get on the boat and sail away. That they will see the blue water rolling by as they go. He is not leaving alone but with his parents. And he thinks of his past, the Storytime yard and the mango mornings. But he also hopes of new beginnings, new doors opening and old closing. He was told that the ship will arrive in the midsummer light, and he is told to remember to write to his grandmother. And then it’s time to say goodbye, time for the last hug. And then its time to leave. He is told to write to grandmother about all of his Windrush adventures. Now he steps on the ship, not really knowing how the journey will be, or knowing that he is taking a step into history. Bringing his Caribbean eye to the new horizons. And remembering grandmothers’ words as a shining beacon.
