Part 1: Short summary of the article “Marvin Gaye’s 1971 ‘What’s Going On?’ remains unanswered today.”
The article “Marvin Gaye’s 1971 ‘What’s Going On?’ remains unanswered today” published in April 2018, in The Conversation, by Stewart Maganga, is an article about how, the song of Marvin Gaye ‘What’s Going On’, is a protest song in which the message and relevance will never disappear. It is actually as relevant today as when it was released. The article focuses on the origin of the song, how the song was almost never released because “Motown was cautious of promoting songs of a political nature”, as the article says and also the singers background, how Marvin Gaye had a real tough childhood. It focuses on the context of the song, how it was a response to the Vietnam war. But most importantly the relevance today, about a world that’s upside down and whether war is necessary.
Part 2: An analytical essay (600-900 words) about the text.
Protest songs today?
Pop songs started being about very neutral topics, but when protest music came into the picture, a lot of political issues started to be written about. Politics was something you would not express through music for a long time. They started with these protest songs to rebel and question the society. Many of the protest songs that were written were only relevant for a specific amount of time. But are there protest songs that are still relevant today, and are protest songs still being written today?
