Barack Obama is our speaker in this speech, which takes place at The White House Briefing Room November 24, 2014. Barack Obama is also the 44th and current president of the United States and has been it since 20 January 2009.Obama is a democrat, but this does not show in the text. The President underscored that are things everyone can do to help - from criminal justice reform to political engagement.
The occasion of Obama’s speech is that a black boy called Michael Brown was shot to death by a white police officer whose name is Darren Wilson. Michael Brown was an unarmed black teenager. Michael was a good boy in a bad ‘hood. Afterwards the police officer was accused and put on a trial for the killing of the young Michael Brown. County prosecutor announced that a grand jury decided not to indict the police officer. This caused Barack Obama’s speech right after the grand jury’s decision. Obama tries to calm down the population by giving the speech, because he did not want riots or another wave of protests because of the grand jury’s decision. Barack Obama gave the speech to the entire population in the United States and to the people who would start a wave of protests and riots. Obama was very vocabulary, which everybody was able to understand. The language is an everyday language. Since Barack Obama is a black person, he was able to reach out to black individuals as well as white individuals. Obama gave this speech to stop all the riots, demonstrations etc. Obama wanted from now on all the protesting people to react peacefully and the police officers to react nonviolently, especially for people, no matter color, who are unarmed. Obama chose to include Michael Brown’s parents since it is their son, who has been shot and killed.
