Would you travel to an unknown village in India for buying illegal cannabis with unfamiliar people? I wouldn’t. It is definitely too risky. But this is exactly what the Englishman Lee does and I suppose it may have consequences for him.
The british short story “Justified and Ancient” is written by Simon Lewis. In the opening scene we are given a description of the settings. The story takes place in India in an old small ethnic village near Delhi. The residents of the village are poor; they don’t have electricity and they live in primitive surroundings. The inhabitants live a very simple life. The society is religious because they live in accordance with the Hindi system. The village has a temple, and many things are sacred.
The main character of the story is Lee. He is from England and he is unemployed. Even though he is unemployed he is definitely from the middle-class or the upper-class because of his fathers job. His father works as a management consultant. In the short story Lee is described as a rather disgusting person. He is fat; his got thick hairy arms and a big neck. He seems unhygienic and insanitary because he doesn’t wash himself and keeps himself clean. In spite of the fact that Lee is not that attractive his has a girlfriend back home.
