”Alice in Wonderland” or ”Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland”, as it is called originally, is a timeless fairytale about manners. The novel contains a very important subject, which is independent from the time it has been read in. The analysis will deal with the three chapters: “Down the Rabbit-Hole”, “Advice from a Caterpillar” and “Alice’s Evidence”, which we have read. The scene is laid in Wonderland, which is also told in the title of the book - it is only in the beginning and in the very end, the story takes place in the real world.
In the first chapter, the little girl Alice is sitting next to her older sister, who is reading a boring adult-book with “no pictures and no conversations”. Then she sees a running and talking rabbit, which she follows down a rabbit hole. Alice is not that old, and her actions made before considerations is very much due to her age. Even though I believe that I would have followed the rabbit myself, I still think it is a very childish act made against the background of the two evils: curiosity and the love of adventure. That choice starts the journey Alice is going to take through the whole novel. Down the rabbit hole, Alice enters a big hall, with doors all around her. Unfortunately every door is locked and the only key she finds, only fits the smallest door, which is not much larger than a rat hole. Unfortunately the smallest door is also the one she wants to enter. Through the door she sees the most beautiful garden; a symbol of the childhood she is leaving, and which she wants to go back to. Then she sees a bottle with a label saying “DRINK ME”, and even though she is very young, she knows that “if you drink much from a bottle marked “poison”, it is almost certain to disagree with you sooner or later”, but since the bottle was not labelled “Poison” she drank it all. That action starts a number of occurrences, which changes Alice’s size, because she was too big and too small by turns. This is the first real sign of Alice growing and being an adult. The changing sizes she is going through symbolizes the insecurity and identity crisis, you will experience during the teenage-puberty. Once you are a child, and before you know it you are an adult. It can bring such an awful mess, that in the end, you are not aware of who you are.
