George Blecher’s article “More than coffee: New York’s Vanishing Diner Culture” begins with him telling that diners have been a big part og his life, almost like a home for him. He believes that more diners are closing down because more modern coffeeshops and restaurants are coming. The restaurants are based on a new food culture, because more immigrants are starting more new food chains. He is telling us about all the diners he used to be at, but which are closed down. The diners have a special meaning, because people get closer and socialize with each other. His regular diner is now on the so-called “metro” where he meets a woman named betty, they become friends. Betty is a beautiful 80- something Swedish and south African women, and she was the queen of the metro.
