Javed is a pakistani boy, who lives in a small town outside of London, called Luton. His neighbor is his childhood best friend, Matt. But as they grow older they slowly start to drift apart from each other, as Matt begins to make new friends. Javed loves to write poems, he writes poems about the everyday life of a pakistani in a strange country, about his dreams for the future, he also writes the lyrics for Matt's popband. Javed only has one friend, being Matt, and he has a lot of trouble meeting new people his own age. But as he discovers he’s not the only pakistani in the school, he quickly becomes friends with the other pakistani, Roops. Roops introduce Javed to Bruce Springsteen, who by the time of the movie, is a little outdated and old school. Javed fell in love with Bruce Springsteen, the second he first heard his music and felt like he really could relate to his lyrics. Javed could identify with the feeling of the town not being too big for his dreams and feeling captured in a small town with no dreams. Javed instantly gets a desire to inform the whole school about this lyrical wonder, who's gone under everybody's noses the whole time. As his self esteem and confidence begins to grow, Javed gets a girlfriend, called Eliza. Eliza is a very enthusiastic girl, who wants to change the world for good. Javed continuously sends his poems to his english teacher, Ms.Clay. One day Ms.Clay submitted one of Javed's poems to a writing contest and he won, the price being a fully paid scholarship to a writing school in New Jersey. Javed badly wants to go, but his very strict father denies him the opportunity. By that time Javed has had enough of his fathers exaggerated rules and decides to go anyway.
