In the long history of mankind. Man has always sought to increase their own quality of life, be it in wealth, strength or something third. This paper will tell the story behind a poem of a battle that had dire consequences for the British Empire. The battle of Balaclava is where the charge of which the poem is about, takes place. The story of how it happened, and how the poem came to be, will be answered throughout the assignment and as you read on, the difference between how an Empire made through force an intimidation and an Empire built through diplomacy stands up against each other, how one is respected and changed the way we live and how the other leads to chaos and destruction through different opinions.

The assignment is divided in 2 parts, a part made up of 4 individual parts, each giving information regarding the poem in one way or another, and a part called “Putting into perspective - philosophy of man” which answers the question on the Victorian era´s philosophy of man and why Queen Victoria has an entire era named after her and why this era is remembered so well by many Europeans.

The actual partial analysis of the poem is enough to give the reader the intended understanding and meaning of the poem as well as the intention by the poem.
