Child labor: The inconvenient truth behind India’s growth story
“People have dropped the ball” (Misra & Jacobs, 2017, s. L. 18). Those are the words from the UNICEF child protector in India, Joachim Theis, who also states that child labor “is being seen as something which is too difficult to stop”. Since India gained independence seventy years ago, their economy and wealth has been booming, and at one point the country overtook China as the world’s fastest growing economy. But even though India’s economy has been growing significantly over the last several years, a lot of children are still suffering from child labor. 33 million children from the age of 5 and up to the age of 18, are working, and a stunning 33 percent of these children are under the age of 15. India has tried turning this situation around for a long time, and is trying to rehabilitate former child workers, and even though it has worked for some years, the situation of child labor is once again rising in the major cities. That brings us back to the statement from Joachim Theis. Is child labor really a problem that is too difficult to stop?
