An analytical essay of the extract from the novel “Concrete Rose” by Angie Thomas
Being a teenage dad is not easy, but being a teenage dad who’s failing school, dealing drugs, and has a second child on the way, is even harder. This may seem like a crazy scenario, but for the main character Maverick Carter of the novel “Concrete Rose” written by Angie Thomas, this is reality. In chapters 22 and 23 we get to see the world from a different perspective, one where drugs, violence, and teenage parents are a normality.
In the extract of “Concrete Rose” Maverick Carter, a 17-year-old dad, is facing one of his life’s most difficult challenges. He’s not only selling drugs to take care and raise his baby whilst preparing for another child, but he’s also dealing with the murder of his cousin and best friend Dre. On top of all that he’s informed by his school counselor Mr. Clayton that he won’t be graduating in May (p. 248, ll.58f).
