What is facial recognition? Why is it being used? Why is it important? What are the consequences if we fail to manage it correctly? These are some of the questions I will be discussing in this essay. Today, we have many different technologies. One of them is facial recognition. It is used broadly for security reasons, but also other things. The primary criticism the technology faces is the infringement on our guaranteed freedom. Its limitations have also become blurry and without any guidance. The problem spans across all modern societies with all humans affected equally by it. From, robbers to celebrities to poor people. No human is safe from facial recognition. This is one among many reasons why we need to discuss this topic and decide our stance on it because whether you like it or not, it’s a technology that has come to stay.
Relevance to you
Does facial recognition matter to me? Why should I care about it? Like many others, you might have grown up in an environment where the technology hadn’t been of any relevance to you because the internet didn’t exist or, maybe you don’t care. The importance of facial recognition cannot be understated. The entire society you live in and yourself are affected by it. FT reports big companies such as Microsoft and IBM are using millions of people’s faces from the internet to train and improve their facial recognition technology. Keep in mind that they are doing this without any consent at all. Prof Jason Schulz, of the New York University School of Law, has called this “the dirty little secret of AI training sets”.
