Few people know that in Britain, it has been discovered that the publics faces have been scanned secretly by private companies and have been for some time? This may come as a shock for some readers, but cases like these have not only been found in Britain; but around the whole world. Most people are ignorant as to where these scans end up or who they are shared with. Facial recognition has become one of the most popular security measures in the world. The technology used is based on unique, and measurable characteristics that can be used to verify or recognize a person’s identity. “The Guardian” states that in 2021, many property developers, shopping centers, museums, conference centers and casinos use facial recognition technology to enhance their security. Even though companies as such argue that it is for the best, many civilians have not been enlightened about their faces and other private data being leaked and this is a huge breach of user privacy and should be banned worldwide.
Firstly, facial recognition is a threat to individual privacy. Most people don’t like the idea of their pictured getting taken, or having to share private information in the first place; now what would they think about all of that getting stored in an unknown database? Facial recognition involves users privacy being shared and stored by anonymous people. Even though governments have implemented rules in order to prevent peoples information being leaked, there have been several cases of rules not being followed. For example, “The Guardian” states that a company that operates facial recognition systems in China has exposed the personal information of 2.5 million people after leaving their database unprotected. 2.5 million people whose private information has been leaked.
