In the story, it is mentioned several times, that Lucy is a very smart girl. “Apart from Angela Howe, I’m the only student taking nine O-levels. It makes me feel warm inside, like someone just poured a lot of honey and its coating everything”. This implies that she is smart. It also implies that she doesn’t just take nine O-levels because she is good at it. She enjoys the feeling, which makes this a good thing
Lucy does not only express herself by telling directly about herself. She also expresses herself through her distinctive writing-style. “The detention room is also the school greenhouse. It’s hot in here and it smells like wet and earth”. (ll. 3-4, s. 34) Through Lucy’s writing we see that she uses a lot of metaphors, which makes her writing better than you would expect from an average High School Student. In this example, she uses two different kinds of metaphors, the first one is a metafo and the second is a simile.
But Lucy is not just a smart girl, she has some issues as well. She is friends with a very tough girl, called Bethan, and Bethan made her do something, she wasn’t proud of. “I do not hate Penny Jones. Poor Penny Jones. You should have seen her face when I asked her to meet me down the subway after school. I could feel Bethan behind me, checking I didn’t jib”.(ll 3-5, s. 35). Lucy did not actually want to hit Penny, but because she was afraid of Bethan, so she did it anyway. Even though she feels bad about it.
