Thank you for letting me come to your school to speak about teenagers in Britain. I am glad to see so many cheerful and healthy young Danish Business College students here today.
My name is Sarah Cavill and I represent Dawn Butler, the minister for young citizens and youth engagement in United Kingdom. I am here to speak about some problems which have cropped up the last couple of years concerning teenagers in Britain, and today I will compare British teenagers with other European teenagers and I would like to discuss what the problems among teenagers in UK is caused by and what can be done to solve them.
First of all, the mental well-being of UK teenagers is among the worst in Europe: Once in every 10 teenage girls has self-harmed and child obesity is increasing. Furthermore, 33% of UK teens say they got drunk at 13 or younger and British teens drink more alcohol than teens anywhere in Europe. The number of teenage girls having under-age sex has doubled in the past ten years and over 35% of 15-year-old English boys have had some kind of sexual relationship. As if that is not enough, 33% of 15-years-olds say they have tried cannabis, 1 in 5 UK teens has been offered ecstasy or cocaine and 25% of UK school pupils say they have committed a crime in the past year.
