The short story “The Sin Bin or Lucy’s Heart” is written by Lucy Cross in the year of 2000.
The story is about a young girl named Lucy Cooke, who is sitting in detention, because she beat up an innocent girl named Penny Jones.
The detention teacher, Mr. Patterson, is really shocked by what Lucy has done, because she usually behaves appropriately in school. She is normally a great A student and one of the brainiest girls in school.
In the detention, Lucy spends a lot of time drawing an anatomical heart.
While she draws, she wonders why she hit Penny, who used to be her friend.
She feels bad for her; because she knows that, she is going through a lot.
However, she did it because of the pressure she felt from her “friend” Bethan, who is the toughest girl in school.
Lucy thinks that Bethan made her do it, because she wanted her to prove her loyalty. Even though she thinks that, what Bethan did was inappropriate, she is somehow too afraid to do anything about it.
Lucy is too afraid to show Bethan that she actually likes taking school seriously as well, because she doesn’t want to embarrass her.
