Analytical essay:
In the short story “Only You Farang Are So Easy to Come and Leave”, we meet a family consisting of a mother, a father, and their daughter Lara. Throughout the story, the family drifts further and further apart, which is partly caused by their financial situation. The story takes place in the outer parts of Bangkok during an economic crisis, which has led to families living under terrible conditions. Because of the crisis, many people are left with large debts and are unable to pay them off. This leads to a lot of men committing suicide to avoid being sent to prison. The atmosphere in the city is therefore very depressing and oppressive. Lara’s family is also affected by the crisis. They are forced to move into their old townhouse from their old condominium. The townhouse is divided by walls, which represents the figurative walls between Lara’s mother and father.
