The short story “New Directions” from 1993 by Maya Angelou is about how a black woman with children and almost no money succeeds to become something better than her destiny.
The main character, Annie Johnson, lives with her two toddling sons and her husband, Mr. William Johnson. The marriage does not work well, so they decide in common to part their ways. Now Annie has no money, but she does not want to be a domestic working at the factories, so she steps of her road and makes her own path. With her delicious food, she achieves to make the factories depend on her. Therefore, she builds a stand and serves her food for the factory workers. Now it is them coming to her and not her coming to them.
Through the time, the woman’s role has been to make sure for the next generation and take care of her husband so he could work. The woman’s fate has never been decided by herself but by the fact that she was a woman and not a strong workable man. In other the words, the woman has no control or influence on her life. But sometimes you must make new paths in life. This is what the short story “New Directions” by Maya Angelou, focuses on. The story takes part in the development of an independent woman in early 20th century and her way of becoming a tough single mother for her children.
