Liam Payne, Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan and Zayn Malik all got the same idea in 2010, to apply for The X-factor in UK, as a solo artist. They got through to boot camp, but didn’t make it to the judge’s houses. But the judges called the 5 boys back on stage, and told them they were too talented to let go of, and that’s when the new pop band One direction were formed. Simon Cowell was their mentor, and they ended up in 3. Place in the competition.
The boys after x-factor:
Simon Cowell signed them to the record label Syco Records in London. And then the boys took about 8 months, and began to record the song from their upcoming album in Sweden. Their debut album, Up all night, was released in Ireland and the UK in November 2011. The album bowed at number two on the UK albums chart, selling 138,163 copies, and became the UK's fastest-selling debut album of 2011. Up all night went straight to number one on the United States Billboard 200, selling 176,000 copies in its first week, which made One Direction the first British group in US chart history to achieve this success with their debut album. They were inducted into the Guinness Worlds Records as a result. Up All Night also became the first album by a boy band to sell 500,000 digital copies in the US, and as of August 2012, had sold over 3 million copies worldwide.
