I know you’re probably wondering about my daily life as it emerges in your previous letter. But after I moved to Denmark, it is only through the mass media that I’ve experienced distress and misery. I want to tell you a bit about how it feels.
Every morning I get up at 7 am. After a shower I go to the kitchen, make coffee and set the table. Then I fetch the newspaper, and while I eat my breakfast, I read it.
Today there’s again articles about all the horrible things which are currently happening in the world. As an example, there’s an article about some terrorists who are holding over 100 people as hostages in a bank. There are also pictures of children who are starving in Africa, and refugees who are suffering from distress in Asia. On the front page there’s an article about the situation back home in Turkey. It is difficult to imagine that political prisoners are being tortured in the prisons while I’m comfortably sitting and drinking my morning coffee.
Sometimes however, accidents also happen in Denmark. Yesterday, for example, when I was eating my breakfast, I heard a loud bang. I rushed to the window and saw that a house was on fire. A bunch of people huddled together while others stood and watched the flames that licked the house’s walls. In the meantime, the ambulances and fire engines soon arrived, and shortly after the fire was put out. The ambulance people went long to search for occupants in the house - they had no idea that the whole family spent the holidays in Spain. That is often the case here: when accidents happen, the help is near even though it only affects one thing.
