”Singer of songs” is a short story written by Ken Mcbeath. The story begins in a pub in Scotland, Edinburg where the main character Mac meets his old friend Gordon. He works as a diamond exploration in Africa. They both catch up on each other lives and Mac starts comparing how his life is way more boring than Gordons. After few drinks Mac discovers that his songs were listened in Africa by Gordon’s crew and that Mac is pretty famous there. People call him Mac Hlabela lo Ngoma which means the singer of songs. Later Gordon offers Mac to visit him in Africa. Mac heard a lot of stories about wild animals that live there, and therefore he is a bit frightened. After the drinks they both go home and Mac goes to sleep in the garden shed. In the end of the short story, Mac falls asleep with the thought of visiting Africa.

Analytical setting

We all feel empty time to time. But does one have the courage to take chances in life, not only to make one’s life more interesting but also to balance between the material life and spiritual life?

We can see that there´s a big contrast between Mac´s living place and work - „still making plans for me to escape, even temporarily, from the suffocation of a dreary job and a bleak marriage and the awful Scottish weather.“ (page 4, line 113-114). It shows that Mac is unhappy with his current life and marriage. „My job was the boring one...“ (page 3, line 88).
