Text one is called “The Sandra Bullock Trade”, and is written by David Brooks. It’s an article from an op-ed column from The New York Times website from March 30, 2010. The article is about happiness, and things that can affect your happiness. Can you be happy if you have a failed marriage? Will you become happier if you win an award? David Brooks doesn’t seem to think so.
“Would you exchange a tremendous professional triumph for a severe personal blow?” (Text 1, line 3-4). Could you sacrifice your personal life to become a star, and still be happy? Sandra Bullock had a very exiting, but at the same time, sad month. First, she won an Academy Award for best actress. Then the news reports are claiming that her husband is an “adulterous jerk” (Text 1, line 2). David Brooks’ question to all the readers is now: Would you take that deal?
Davis Brooks’ answer to the question is no. He thinks that a good personal life is enough, to keep a person happy. He doesn’t think that wealth is enough. “If you have an unsuccessful marriage, it doesn’t matter how many career triumphs you record, you will remain significantly unfulfilled.” (Text 1, line 13-15).
