Hazel’s adult children and their opinion of their mother
The children berate their mother for dancing like "a bitch in heat" or "a sex-starved" woman.
They criticize her for drinking. They hate the wig she is wearing. They go on to criticize the way she dresses too young. Her children expect her to represent the elders of the community, but have not prepared her ahead of time.
Hazel’ opinion of her children
The conflict between Hazel and her children stems from the fact that her sons do not take time to consider the feelings of their mother or of Bovanne.
She is particularly hurt by her child Elo, who she felt particularly close to when Elo was growing up. She saw a lot of herself in Elo.
Her children lambast her.
She leaves her children and brings Bovanne from the party.
The children insult their mother's sense of identity, insisting she conform to their own.
