Martin Luther King’s speech “I have a dream” from 1963 was an essential moment for the civil rights movement. Martin Luther King describes his dreams of freedom and equality. A future in the United States where everyone, regardless of race, can live together in harmony as equal citizens. He mentions that even though slavery has been abolished, there is still inequality and that we must change it. He sets himself up as an advocate for this and inspires people to do the same.

Martin Luther King’s speech “I have a dream” from 1963 is one of the most famous speeches in the history. He stated that the day itself of giving the speech would “go down in history as the greatest demonstration for freedom in the history of our nation”. And Martin Luther King was right, because even today 60 years later, it still has a big impact on us. The Speech made many African Americans people’s lives much better and more civil than it was before. With the strong message and his use of rhetorical devices, it became one of the most influencing speeches ever.

Martin Luther King uses a lot of rhetorical devices e.g., the three known appeal forms, ethos, logos, and pathos. Ethos is used in the speech to make people believe in what he says. We can see the ethos in the text when he says” Five score years ago, a great American, in whose symbolic shadow we stand today, signed the Emancipation Proclamation.” Here we see Martin Luther King use the trustworthiness of Abraham Lincoln who was a famous American president that abolished slavery and fought for afro American people. He creates trust because it seems too us that they are fighting together.
