Martin Luther King was born in 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia. Martin lived in a middleclass neighborhood with his parents. When Martin was a child there were “Jim Crow laws”. Jim Crow laws separated blacks from whites. They didn’t go to the same schools and blacks from the southern states were not welcome in hotels, restaurants, schools, churches, motels, cafes, elevators and more. In the United States black people were oppressed by white. One day the white boys Martin played with, where not outside, so Martin went to their house. The boys’ mother told Martin that his friends would not be playing with him that day, or the next day, or ever, just because Martin was black and they were white. Another problem was that in the south if you took a buss blacks had to pay for the fare in front of the bus, then run out and get in through the back door, and sometimes the buss didn’t wait for them, but drove of.
