Charlie is a freshman in high school, he had earlier struggled with a depression, therefor he forces himself to participate in school, to prevent himself falling back into his depression. On his first day he gets harassed by his classmates, but becomes friends with his English teacher Mr. Anderson. Charlie meets Patrick and Sam, who are both seniors at a football game.
Later on, Charlie attends homecoming, where he hangs out with Sam and Patrick. Afterwards he joins a party with them, where he gets to meet their friend group. Charlie has started to develop feelings for Sam, but Sam has a boyfriend named Craig, which makes him jealous. He accidently eats a pot brownie, where he becomes high. While in the kitchen, Charlie tells Sam that his best friend shot himself not long ago, where he leaves Sam shocked.
Charlie goes upstairs, where he sees Patrick and Brad a popular football player making out. Patrick tells Charlie that he can’t tell anyone because Brad’s father wouldn’t approve.
At Christmas the whole friend group exchange secret Santa presents. Sam drags Charlie to show him her gift, a typewriter. They begin talking about kisses, and Charlie says that he hasn’t had his first kiss. Sam kisses him and says that she wants his first kiss to be with somebody who loves him.
