Feeling lonely is a common thing. However, we all deal with loneliness in completely different ways. Some people read books because books represent an escape from the real world and an entrance to an illusionary world. Other people go out shopping to get their mind off things. There are also people who write down their thoughts and adventures down so they don’t feel lonely anymore or because they want to share a part of their life with people who understand what they are going through. And such characters play a prominent role in the book ‘The Perks of Being a Wallflower’ written by Stephen Chbosky in 1999.

In the book ‘The Perks of Being a Wallflower’ we are introduced to the main character of the novel named Charlie who is depicted as a wallflower. The story is narrated by Charlie and the book is told completely through Charlie’s perspective. The reader knows just as much as Charlie knows about any situation. We don’t know what’s going on inside the other characters’ mind. When Charlie’s childhood memories about his aunt are revealed at the end of the novel, the reader is just as shocked as Charlie is. That’s why it’s a first-person narration. The book consists of several letters that the protagonist writes to an unnamed ‘friend’, almost like a diary. In the meantime, the author leaves several hints throughout the book that show that the relationship between the aunt and the nephew is not quite normal.
