Right after John left Rachel and Samuel were left alone. Even under the protection of her father in law it could now be prohibited. The elders of the town saw no other way but to shunne her. Samuel could have stayed with them but Rachel would not abandon her own son. The elders said that they had to set strict rules for everybody and everybody had to follow them. To fall in love with an English was out of the question. The suspicion in all of them was taken very seriously and even though they did not have evidence they did not question the love in her eyes. They said that she had betrayed all the Amish customs and that she was no longer welcome. She had to say goodbye to her family and friends and never see them again. She had to accustom to a new environment and provide for herself and Samuel. With no job and no place to go she stepped out into the real world without an education, bank count and without an identity. She had been so shielded in the Amish that she wasn’t an existing person in the other world. The English world. She didn’t fit in anywhere. Her Amish ancestors would not matter in the English world because there they had other rules and traditions. She would be an outcast anywhere she would go from now on. But she would be strong for Samuel and they would be able to modify a new life.
