Marie is very mature despite her age. She has already had sex and seems to have already grown breasts. Marie is described as “an adult squished inside a 13-year-old body”, who wears lipstick and is pretty straightforward, trying to talk about sex with the other kids on the playing field. She never wants to play like the other kids, and seems disinterested with toys, “She acted bored by everyones obsession with them(...)” . Marie is known to just sit by the hawthorne trees, only talking to other people if they end up coming over to her, which they did since she was new and exciting to the village.
Marie is thickskinned. She doesn’t care what others think or say about her, which makes a lot of sense when her home situation comes to light. Marie is seen repeatedly talking back to her elders and doesn’t get scared of the threats coming from her cousin. Marie is seen being disrespected repeatedly by her cousin, for example when he calls her “a stupid cow.” She is a neglected child. Although we hear about Marie’s dad, we never see him present in the story, and Marie’s cousin is not seen as a good and responsible guardian for her. Marie is seen wearing cheap old clothes and sloppy shoes. This does make sense since the starte of Marie’s house does not seem taken care of. Rachels describes it as a “small brick farmhouse with dusty windows and a huddle of squat outbuildings.” It sounds as if her family wouldn’t be able to pay for new clothes like the other kids’ parents.
