Analyse af novellen 'We're not Jews'

World War 2 ended in 1946 and afterwards many people from the former English colonies immigrated. Back then the English people had still the mentality of “white superiority” which meant it was very hard for the immigrants to find work and live a normal life. In the extract from the short story “We’re not Jews” we meet Azhar, his family and his surroundings. His father was one of the many people who immigrated to England after World War 2. Their life, where they try to fit in and obtain respect from the Englishmen, is portrayed in this short story.

The main character in the short story is Azhar. The children in his class are bullying him every day but even so he is actually doing very well in school and is one of the best readers in his class. Day by day he stays passive towards all the bullying but one day, after talking to his mother about the bullying, he stands up against Little Billy and calls him by the name “common muck.” That might not have been the brightest idea because the next day Little Billy comes to school with a bunch of new cruel words to call Azhar.
