The space race was a competition between US and the Soviet Union about who could accomplish the biggest events in space first.
The space race was a chain of event
The first event began in 1955 when both the US and the Soviet Union announced that they would be launching satellites into orbit. The soviets took the US announcement as a challenge and even established a commission whose goal was to beat up the US in putting a satellite into space.
And they did in fact accomplish to be the first to putting a satellite into space. The satellite was placed into orbit on October the 4th in 1957 and it was called Sputnik I. The Americans was behind four months with their satellite called the Explorer I.
The first event started out with the US being behind a lot, which gave time to the soviets to come up with even greater things
The next event was the soviets sending a man into space in 1961 leading to a small race of who could walk for a longer amount of time in space. The soviets were the first ones to have the spacewalk which lasted 10 minutes, but the Americans’ spacewalk lasted 23 minutes.
