So, what happens in the extract is, that we are introduced to Thomas Gradgrind, the schoolteacher M'choakumchild, Mr. Bounderby, and the city of Coketown. Coketown can be described as a fictional manufacturing town during the industrial revolution in the 19th century.

The novel “Hard Times” takes place in the fictional city called Coketown in the Northern part of England. The location "Coketown" was supposed to be the city of Preston, Lancashire during the industrial revolution. The excerpt from the text is about a schoolroom where you hear Mr. Thomas Gradgrind reprimand the headmaster in front of the students. He expresses his view on teaching to the schoolteacher in the classroom in front of the students.Coketown is a very dark city, with many industrial buildings and factories with machines standing and working at the same monotonous pace. All the houses are the same, look alike the big streets look alike, and the small streets also look the same. Even the people who live there look alike.
