A) The Sandwich Factory is a short story written by Jason Kennedy in 2007. This story is about a man’s boring life and his job at the Sandwich Factory. The story takes place in the working class some place in England. The narrator, the worker at the sandwich factory, tells us about his life, and gives us a picture of how it is to work at a factory like the one he is working at. Everybody at the factory seems strange or very weird. The first person we hear about is the madman, who runs around with a knife. That does not sound normal; neither do the rest of the things we hear about. The job is extremely boring, the managers are very harsh, and the pay is very low. He says directly that the workers are bored and unhappy. Also when he talks about how the acid in the tomatoes causes pain in the soul, he really expresses how much he hates the factory. “All kind of bitter thoughts filled me then”
He also talks about how revered the forklift drivers at the factory are. They get more pay, and a lot of workers have a dream that one day they could drive a forklift. He talks about it, as it is the biggest achievement one could do. Not that he thinks so, but that is how a lot of the workers think. That tells us something about what kind of people who is working at the factory. They are being pictured as primitive people with no specific values in life. He introduces us to some of the people he works with. In the end of the story we have a situation not happening in the factory, but in his car as he drives a girl home. At the end we are back at the factory. The main character seems to be a guy who doesn’t like his life. He talks about a woman called Dot. Every time she is mention in the story, it is something about sex. She also finds a girl for him, because she thinks he is not getting enough. That is like the first time we see him in a conversation, and he seems pretty shy, and not used to talk to people, especially not girls. “Dot wanted someone to have sex with me” Dot was concerned that I did not say much, which I didn’t try to “get into the girls’ knickers” and she searched for a girl who would sleep with me. I had zero confidence with women anyway” He lives a very lonely life, we do not hear about any family or any friends. We just get the feeling that after work he just goes home and reads a book. He is telling us what he is thinking with the most boring and boringly voice he could use. The language is also pretty simple: “He always chooses whoever had the best legs. Today it was all men. He marked them all as “poor””. The managers are also treating the entire employer badly. As I mentioned before they locked them in of they were behind schedule, and that might be the reason that he stopped working at the factory. The daily rhythm at the factory could be a way of describing his own life. Very boring and trivial, like the conveyor belt he is working at.
