In the early 1960s In Mississippi, a young girl named Skeeter returns home after attending university at Ole Miss, to see her friends and family, and to take care of her seriously ill mother.
Unlike her female friends, and colleagues who used their Ole Miss time solely to find a husband. Skeeter has never dated or had a boyfriend, despite wanting romance in her life, strives primarily for a career, determined to become a writer, she begins interviewing the black women who have spent their entire lives serving white families. The female servants also called “the help” do the cooking and cleaning, but their primary responsibility is child-rearing. The servants get passed down within families from generation to generation. Along the way, new friendships are forged, and a new sisterhood emerges, but not everyone in the town handles the new situation equally well, especially not the older woman.
