Bas lumbers over a crooked line of paver stones that leads to the stairs, which he climbs one at a time to the porch. Bas holds open the screen door to knock shyly on the main door. No lights come on inside. Reed may forget all about Bas. He may even forget about me. Bas goes to the window, cups his hands around his eyes, and looks inside. The train’s reflection runs in one side of his head and out the other. He moves down the porch to the next window. The train ends, and as it continues westward, the street falls silent. I hear Bas breathe hard as he descends from the porch. I hear each stair creak under his weight. I see the railing, made of galvanized pipe, shake. Bas stops on the paver stones, halfway to his Cadillac. From there, he looks across the street right at me, stands under the water tower in a moon shadow. But that wasn’t why Bas didn’t see me. He thinks about Cheyenne and wonders who she was with. He conjures, for himself, an image of Reed, which makes me invisible.
