Urban spaces like New York offer many positive aspects of life to young people. The city is characterized by the tourism attractiveness and culture diversative both of which add excitement and comfort to many people. However, there are also darker sides to urban life. The city may make you feel lonely. In the short story “The man who loved flowers” by Stephen King, we meet a character who seems happy and loved. Throughout the short story, we slowly realise who he really is, and this contributes to the atmosphere of the short story which changes from being peaceful and lovely to dark and gloomy. The short story focuses on loneliness and lets the reader experience the feeling of being overlooked.
This novel brings up big difficulties and problems in the world and especially USA. On the surface New York looks exiting and lovely, with thousands of tourists who wants to experience the city that never sleeps and all the fascinating skyscrapers. But is it really that good of a city in reality? That’s what this novel brings up. The dramaturgy is very important for the story. In the beginning, New York is described as a wonderful city. “The air was soft and beautiful; the sky was darkening by slow degrees from blue to the calm and lovely violet of dusk”. But is it really that calm in New York? Well, that’s not what the statistics shows. There were in May 2022 alone 414 guns related arrests in New York. And 282 murders in a year. This is also shown in the novel, when we hear the news on the radio, where it says: “A hammer murder was still on the loose”.
