Analyse af 'The Man Who Loved Flowers'

The short story: “The Man Who Loved Flowers” written by Stephen King, in 1977, takes place in New York City on Manhattan. It’s May of 1963, JFK had declared that the situation in Vietnam would bear watching, and the Russians had exploded a nuclear device. It’s not all good in the US, yet we follow a man, who is very much in love and happy. We follow this man through the streets of New York. He is going to buy flowers to the love of his life, and on his way to the flower-stand we hear everyone thinking how in love and happy he seems. The love of the man’s life is called Norma, and he is going to meet her. Later we are told that he’s in fact not meeting with the love of his life, since she probably doesn’t exist. It’s late at night, and he sees a woman, whom he thinks is Norma, but when he realizes it isn’t, he takes out his hammer, which he had had in his pocket the whole time, and kill the innocent and unknown woman, who happened to be at the wrong place, at the wrong time. We learn that he has been doing this, multiple times, and that he might have a mental disorder. It ends with him searching for Norma yet again and he keeps walking the streets like he’s in love.
