In Bill Heitland's "The Gab Gift," we follow Benny, a boy who struggles with speaking clearly. He wishes for a "gab gift," which would help him express himself without stumbling over words. Through Benny's eyes, we see a world filled with love and support, but also with challenges and misunderstandings.
He walks us through all the things he wishes to say, and the thoughts behind them. He explains his troubles with speaking, and the weird noises that come as a result of trying.
We get descriptions of his family, which consists of his mom, dad, sister, brother and dog. The story narrates in first person, through benny, about his observations and encounters with being misunderstood, as well as being loved.
In this essay, i will be writing about the people Benny surrounds himself with and how his impediments affect him and how the world sees him, and how he, as well as other disabled people, are humans and just want acceptance and love. I will take a look at the authors message, and which themes are being touched through the text.
Benny has a disability. He has a hard time formulating himself. He describes it as having “marbles” in his mouth, hence why he desires the gab gift. He hopes it will make people see him:
