How does losing someone you only knew trough the internet affect you? Is such a loss real or just a delusion? Do we humans really form deep emotional attachment to the glowing white screen, and how does this impact us mentally and physically? These are some of the thought-provoking and intriguing themes, Lena experiences with her virtual relationship.
Lena is a good and kind-hearted girl with a political personality and strong opinions on a variety of things. At the beginning of the story, we get her perspective on technology and computers. She is criticized by her parents, friends, and teachers for being outdated, as seen in lines 12–15 of the first page: 'My teacher tells my mother and father that I show 'a real hostility to technology' at parent-teacher conferences.' This quotation demonstrates that even the people closest to her, perceive her negative viewpoint toward technology as uncommon, compared to other students. the teacher's bringing up this problem during a parent-teacher conference clearly points out that her rejection of technology is not simply a personal matter but rather a part of who she, which she explains on page 2, lines 2-3: "I can't keep rejiggering my identity, and hating computers is my identity,"
