1. Focus on the ”Trigger Warning” and the first chapter of Kobek’s novel.:
- What are we being promised?
This book won’t hold anything back. It’ll focus on a lot of controversial and disputed topics.
- How does the narrator position himself in relation to what he is narrating about?
He’s telling a story about another person, Adeline, who committed the only unforgivable sin of the twenty-first century. He doesn’t clearly state what Adeline did, only some of her other smaller mistakes, and how someone on the internet reacted to the sin she committed. The narrator takes a defensive stance regarding Adeline’s sin, and a more critical one of the internet and the people who use it.
2. Read the link from Schmoop about what characterizes postmodern literature, https://www.shmoop.com/study-guides/literary-movements/postmodern-literature/characteristics
- How many of these characteristics can you find in the first two chapters of the trigger-warning? Name them.
