What led some Palestinians to set up their own organisations in order to fight for their return to Palestine?
1. The Arab countries surrounding Palestine did not want Palestinian refugees to settle in their country. As the Arab countries did not want Palestinians to live there, they made a refugee camp for them. The conditions in the camp were very poor. The UN was trying convince Israelis to let the Palestinians live in their home country, but those who had returned had attacked the Israelis. This upset the Israelis so much that they killed 5000 Palestinians from 1948 to 1956.
In 1949, the UN Relief Works Agency was beginning to take notice of how desperate the Palestinians had become. Some Arab governments saw the poverty of the refugees as a good propaganda weapon in their struggle against Israel. And as the years went by the population of the refugee camp grew. Most Palestinians were relying on the Arab states to help them, especially Egypt.
Palestinians were beginning to become impatient and in 1957 an organisation was formed called Al-Fatah. During the 1960’s Al-Fatah was an active fighting force. In 1964, the Arab states formed an organisation for the Palestinians called the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO). The aim of the PLO was to expel any Jew who had settled in Palestine since 1918, and to destroy the Israel State.
