A:

Flight is a short story written by Doris Lessing, and it is about a grandfather who is angry against his daughter and his granddaughter who is courting.

The granddad doesn’t like that his eighteen year old granddaughter is courting he thinks she is too young. There are of course many reasons why he gets angry against them. He is now an old man and has seen his family grown, but now when the time has come for his descendant to move forward in this life, he gets frustrated and angry. He shares his home with his daughter and her husband and their children, and this granddaughter whose name is Alice, is their last child to get married and move out. For that reason he thinks the house will be empty; ‘all the young girls with their laughter and their teasing will be gone’. He feels alone, uncherished. This is how he feels, because he knows that the time has come for his granddaughter to move out and he is even angrier against his daughter who has allowed her to marry.
