The story is set in an art gallery. We meet the narrator, a 60-year-old man, a young man and a French school girl. The short story is about the narrator who is sitting in a museum. A 60-year-old man enters the gallery attended by a young man. These men seated themselves beside the narrator. The old man tells the young about a painting. After a little while the young man leaves and some young French school girl enters the room. The old man gazes lovingly at the ‘leader’ of the group of girls. She takes place on the bench beside the old man and falls asleep. The man tells the narrator about the time when he as a 12-years-old boy was in love with a girl (looking exactly like the French girl beside him). The girl wakes up and the group leaves the gallery to get a cup of coffee. The man follows the girls.
When the man sees the French girl he is totally moved. He sees his old love in her. She is the girl he fell in love with when he was 12-years-ols but he could not get her because she was 16. When he was 12 the girl was in love with another guy and married another than the old man.
