Redaktørens vurdering

Novellen er velskrevet og engagerende, men den slutter brat midt i en sætning, hvilket gør den ufuldstændig.

I ran across the city street, and almost got hit by a car. I could almost feel his breath in the back of my neck. I ran around the corner, and could see a diner. When I looked back, he wasn’t in sight, so I went inside. I quickly found a table and sat down. I could hardly breathe. How could it be that he had found me? I had practically been invisible. After I moved away from him, I had changed me name, wasn’t in the national register, and didn’t cause too much attention. I lightened a cigarette, and tried to stay calm. Suddenly I could see a shadow in front of me. He was right behind me. He stood, of course, on the other side of the window, but I had this incredible feeling, that it was over. I was going to die that day. You see, the one I was running away from was my ex-husband. When we first got married, everything was paradise. We loved each other very much. To lovers trapped in a world full of war and violence. But after two years, I got a new job at an advertising agency. It didn’t require, that we had to move or anything, it was the fact that my new boss, was a man in his early thirties. That was apparently enough to make Kenneth (my ex-husband) enormously jealous. He started accused me of having an affair with my new boss. After two weeks at my new job, Kenneth hit me the first time. For several hours after the episode, I was in shock. I thought it only would happen this one time, so I stayed with him. And now I’m here. The shadow suddenly walked away. I felt my entire body shaking, but was determined to stay calm. The shadow was gone now, but I was too scared to turn around. I lightened another cigarette, and enjoyed the bitter smell of the nicotine. I weren’t shaking anymore after the first draw of the cigarette. After a few hours I walked out of the diner. In the beginning I felt relieved that he was gone. But then, for a split second, the feeling that I was going to die came back. I realized that he wasn’t gone forever. He could be back tonight if he wanted. I didn’t dare go back to my apartment. I had to figure out a plan, before he suddenly surprised me on the corner. First of all I had to take of my red jacket. If he still was on the streets he would recognize me in a minute. I took it off, and gave it to a homeless person on the street. She properly needed it more than me anyway. I walked around in the streets of the big apple, when I had a temporary idea. I thought of one of my very dear friends name Michel. He was a big guy. His nickname was Meatloaf, and he hated it. I went to his place, and rang the door. His girlfriend answered. She had never been a very big fan of me, so I wasn’t surprised when I met a killer look in the door. I of course asked if Michel was home. Meatloaf looked kind of dead. You could easily see that he had just slept. I said to him, what he had to walk me home to my apartment, because Kenneth had come back for me. Meatloaf looked a little surprised; I don’t think he had expected that Kenneth would come back for me. Meatloaf was the one person who had helped me get away from him in the first place. Meatloaf walked with me to my apartment. The door was ajar. Meatloaf went in first. There was no one inside. He asked if I would stay with him and Camille. I thanked no, said goodbye, thanks, and locked the door. I decided that I would put up with it anymore. I was going to do something, and didn’t care if it was the last thing I would ever do. I wasn’t going to be afraid anymore. I explained my boss, the next day over the telephone, why I couldn’t go to work that day, and got the day off. I called to get an appointment at a kickboxer. I told him my story, and he was willing to help me right away. The place laid on the corner of Park Avenue and 23rd Street. I had never had such a workout before. He pushed me incredible hard. I trained everyday for a couple of weeks. My trainer and I decided I was ready. I was finally able to stand up for myself. I planed the whole thing. The next time he came to take me back, I was ready.
