The USA – the land of opportunities seen from an immigrants point of view:

by [NAVN A]

US – the land of immigrants

Immigration is a very mentioned subject in America nowadays. So many people are immigrating in to the country and it is estimated that the US is home to approximately 34 million people born outside the country. A period of mass immigration happened in 1890. The main groups of people who immigrated back then were Italians, Irish and Jews. Back then the immigrants constituted about 15% of the population, today they constitute about 10% of the population. The largest group of immigrants today is the Hispanic group. As of July 1, 2004, the estimated Hispanic population of the United States was 41.3 million people. Hispanic people have a lot of children. They gave birth to around half of America’s total population increase in the years from 2000 to 2004. The Census Bureau predicts that by 2050 the Hispanic population will have increased by 200%.

Critics fear the Hispanic wave of immigration

There are for sure many critics and pessimists. Many people fear that the Hispanic wave of immigration and the numerous population group will create two nations: the existing one (consisting of the Anglo-Protestant-African-Catholic-Indian-German-Irish-Jewish-Italian-Slavic-Asian society) and the upcoming Spanish-speaking group. They are especially worried because the new wave is unusually big and it is growing at full speed. But the biggest problems you find in America’s immigration policy and illegal immigrants. The illegal immigrants cost a lot of money in many ways. First of all they cost a lot of money trying to enter the US at the border between Arizona and Mexico. Many of them get injured and therefore they need treatment at the nearby hospitals. The hospitals are as a matter of fact almost being bankrupted as they say.
